What is Dementia?
Dementia is a progressive brain condition that leads to a decline in cognitive functions such as memory, problem-solving, communication, and behaviour. It’s a term that encompasses several conditions, all of which impact daily life.
Diagnosing dementia isn’t straightforward. A comprehensive assessment typically includes:
- A detailed case history
- Reviewing current medications
- Ruling out other conditions like nutritional deficiencies or infections
- Cognitive and mental state examinations
- Blood tests
Why early diagnosis matters
Identifying dementia early offers several advantages:
- Understanding the condition: Learn how dementia can impact daily life.
- Accessing support: Emotional, financial, or practical assistance becomes available sooner.
- Treatment options: Early intervention may help slow its progression.
- Improving quality of life: Proper care can enhance day-to-day living.
It’s easy to dismiss early symptoms as “just old age,” but doing so can delay necessary care. . The best thing to do if you have noticed yourself or suspect someone might be suffering with dementia (or early stages) is to seek advice or help. This can provide peace of mind to yourself and loved ones or even point you in the right direction for the next step.
