Let’s talk about something that might sound a little technical, but it’s super important: abdominal separation! Don’t worry, though; we’ll keep this fun, informative, and easy to digest – no pun intended.
What is it?
Abdominal separation, also known as Diastasis Rectus Abdominis Muscle (DRAM), occurs when the linea alba (that’s the connective tissue in your abdominal wall) stretches and separates. Think of it like making extra room for a baby to grow during pregnancy or when too much pressure builds up in your abdomen. As a result, this separation can create a dome-like bulge because, well, your abdominal contents are looking for space to hang out.
How do you know if you have DRAM?
Usually, it’s spotted through a physical assessment, ultrasound, or CT scan. Symptoms can range from abdominal discomfort and lower back pain to incontinence (or a higher risk of it). Yikes! Therefore, targeting those deep abdominal muscles to strengthen and close the gap is crucial. In some severe cases, surgery might even be required.
Why do we need core strength?
Building deep abdominal strength (with minimal abdominal separation) isn’t just about looking good; it’s about feeling good too! Here’s why it matters:
- First of all, it keeps your posture, balance, and movement in check.
- Additionally, it helps improve the stability of your spine and reduces the risk of injury.
- It also regulates intra-abdominal pressure and supports your trunk organs.
- Lastly, it even indirectly supports your pelvic floor! (Bonus points for multitasking!)
How do we do it?
You’ve probably heard of Reformer Pilates – especially if you are reading our blog today! However, here’s the thing: unless it’s tailored to your specific needs, meaning ‘clinical’ exercise, it might not do much for abdominal separation. General classes focus on strengthening and fitness, but they’re not always individualised to your current strength or activation levels.
At MD Health, we take a personalised approach to Reformer Pilates. Every client starts with a Full Body Assessment to create a plan that’s just right for them. Our sessions are run by qualified health professionals – physiotherapists, exercise physiologists, and osteopaths – who ensure your exercises are safe, effective, and targeted to your unique needs. No guesswork, just results.
So, whether you’re dealing with DRAM or just want a stronger core, we’re here to help you feel your best, one tailored session at a time!
