Losing weight is one of the main reasons people take up exercise, but in reality most people don’t lose weight. And it can be simply down to eating more.

This article looks at a recent study conducted at the Pennington Biomedical Research Centre in Baton Range, Louisiana about why most people don’t lose weight when exercising.

Here are some of the amazing facts:

  • Most people did not lose weight doing cardio exercise, such as bike riding and treadmill 3 times a week, because they eat more to compensate for the extra activity
  • People who exercised MORE (used an extra 7,364 Kilojoules per week) compared to exercised less (used an extra 2,929 Kilojoules per week) were less likely (90% failed) to loss weight (66% failure rate), because they ate more during the week.
  • Cardio exercise had no effect on resting metabolic rate, however this study did not look at the effect of strength training on metabolic rate. Increasing muscle mass has a direct effect on increasing metabolic rate, which his less likely with cardio exercise alone.
