What is the difference between a Physiotherapist and Accredited Exercise Physiologist?

At MD Health our clinical staff are both Accredited Exercise Physiologists and Physiotherapists. We often are asked what is the difference between these two professions…

Both Accredited Exercise Physiologists and Physiotherapists are University qualified Allied Health professionals that have four-five years of training to gain the knowledge and skills to treat and manage a wide range of health conditions. Accredited Exercise Physiologists and Physiotherapists have an in-depth knowledge of the human body and in particular the musculoskeletal system. In addition to this, they need also need to understand an individual’s medical history and any changes to ensure they are prescribing the appropriate exercises and/or treatment to deliver the best outcome for every client.

Every year all the clinical staff at MD Health must continue to complete professional development to be approved by their governing body and Medicare to continue to practice as an Allied Health practitioner.

But what is the difference between an Accredited Exercise Physiologist and Physiotherapist?

Physiotherapists are generally taught to assess and treat musculoskeletal injuries and pain management. However Physiotherapists can work in a wide range of sectors including neurology and cardio-respiratory health. Physiotherapists practice a combination of exercise rehabilitation and manual therapy, such as joint mobilisation, to achieve the best outcomes for their patients.

Accredited Exercise Physiologists also work in a variety of health sectors and generally focus on assessing, developing and implementing exercise programs for individuals with chronic conditions or injuries such as diabetes, cancer or musculoskeletal injuries. Accredited Exercise Physiologists also work on behavior changes to promote healthier lifestyles.

At MD Health our Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists can both assess and treat injuries while helping to manage chronic conditions and help our clientele enhance their quality of life. Our team work collaboratively together so clients are able to see any practitioner and receive consistent and excellent care.

Initial Physiotherapy Assessment

Your initial Physiotherapy assessment at MD Health involves a complete analysis of your injury or pain. This is extremely important as the biomechanical effects from one area may be contributing to another. For example, a typical case of back pain would involve assessing the lumbar spine, pelvis and hips, as all these areas can contribute to back pain.

Following your assessment our clinicians will provide a detailed explanation of the findings, then specific treatment will commence, which will come in different forms depending on what the issue is. Advice on how to manage this will also be provided.

Most conditions take longer than 1 session to make a significant change, this is why we include another 2 sessions complementary to  ensure we can get on top of your issue. If your issue gets better in less than 3 session – great! You have no obligation to attend the extra 2 sessions.

Our Physiotherapists are trained in a wide range of speciality areas

Our team will be able to assist in many ways to help you get moving again.

Whether it be chronic pain or acute injury, speak to one of our highly trained professionals at MD Health to see which path is the best one for you.

Back Pain

An assessment is extremely important to determine the exact reason and contributing factors behind your back pain and what steps you need to take to resolve pain in the long term.  Some common causes of lower back pain include:

  • Lumbar Disc Bulge or Prolapse
  • Lumbar Facet Joint Irritation
  • Pelvic Instability and Sacro-Iliac Joint Irritation (SIJ pain)
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Spinal Canal Stenosis
  • Scar Tissue or Neural Tension as a result of previous injury
  • Lumbar Instability
Sporting Injuries
At MD Health we treat a wide range of sporting injuries, from the acute to chronic sporting injuries, such as

  • Back pain and injuries
  • Knee injuries such as ACL tears, Patello-femoral joint pain and Meniscal injuries
  • Shoulder pain and injuries such as Sub-acromial impingement
  • Ankle injuries such as acute ankle sprains

We will assess all these areas in detail and determine not just the how to reduce the pain in the short term, but a comprehensive plan to reduce the chance of re injury in the long term.

Arthritis and Osteoporosis
MD Health Physiotherapy can help with

  • Improving the strength and control of the joints – Poor muscle strength has a major affect on pain and joint function.
  • Reduce Joint Pain – Strengthening the muscles makes a huge impact on how much arthritis affects your life, in particular pain from knee arthritis often comes from poor knee cap control, not the arthritis itself, which can be managed with exercise
  • Improved ability to Function – Limitations in what you can do is usually due to weakness, more than the arthritis itself.  Strengthening the muscles can have a huge impact on your quality of life
Pre and Rehabilitation
Prehabilitation – Prepare your body for surgery. Effective prehabilitation will assist your body in faster recovery, reduce your hospital stay, minimise rehabilitation time as well as complement the outcome of your procedure

Rehabilitation– Many of our clients have undergone very intrusive surgery and our program has enabled them to make a very impressive recovery as well as making a huge difference to the outcome of their surgery.

With good strength base prior to surgery, your rehabilitation can soley focus on the area directly affected by the surgery. This is why preparing your body for surgery can cut the recovery time to just weeks instead of months.

We are able to strengthen you from head to toe ( remember when you are in the hospital bed and inactive for several days , your muscles will degenerate). If you have decreased overall muscle strength before your surgery you will have a prolonged and painful recovery.
