Have you ever been told you need “rehab” for an injury and wondered what your treating practitioner means by that?
Rehab essentially allows an injury to settle down and go through its natural recovery process, all while maintaining your normal conditioning and fitness.
For example, let’s say you’re training for a long hike overseas, and you roll your ankle. Initially, we might let the ankle rest, apply ice and compression, and keep it elevated for a short time. After this period, we move into the rehab phase. This phase focuses on restoring your ankle’s movement and strength. At the same time, we ensure you maintain your overall fitness level. That way, when you return to hiking, you’ll be ready to perform at your best.
It’s vital to respect the injury and recognise its limitations. However, the ultimate goal is optimising patient performance and outcomes.
To achieve this, exercising as early as possible (as tolerated) is essential. Remaining consistent, despite the injury, is also key. That’s why it’s crucial to find a rehab team or practitioner you trust. They should allow you to move and progress through rehab with your goals in mind.
If everyone is working together and understands what the best “next step” is for the rehab and performance journey, the best outcomes will be achieved.
