What... read moreMD health is an interesting physiotherapy centre. It’s actually more of a cross between physiotherapy, Pilates, and a gym. What happens is that when you go there you sign up for a 13 week program (unless you’re a student or senior, in which case you can go casually). During the first few sessions, you are one-on-one with the physiotherapist. In subsequent sessions, you have two on one sessions.
During the sessions, basically the physiotherapist/exercise physiologist has you doing very light strength training exercises inspired by Pilates (but not actually traditional Pilates). Each session is half an hour long.
I feel there are a lot of positives about MD health. Firstly, all the staff are uniformly friendly and professional. Secondly, the 30 minute sessions are very easy to digest.
One negative would be to do with the format. Because it’s two on one, you’re not going to really get individual attention to the same extent that you would otherwise. They generally do a good job at multitasking, but I feel like if you had a problem that actually required individual attention, this wouldn’t work (maybe they wouldn’t prescribe the two on one configuration though in this case).
I suppose the key question is whether it works. For me, my ailments (sore back and butt) did get somewhat better (but didn’t completely go away). Honestly, though, I’m really not sure how much of the improvements can be ascribed to MD health. The exercises that they had me doing were *really* easy, and I was only doing them twice a week. I really didn’t feel like I was getting much benefit out of it, especially towards the end.
I kind of feel like the real benefit is really just the passage of time, and allowing your body to heal itself. MD health really is just a way of keeping you active during that healing period (although, arguably, you could just skip going to MD health and find another way to keep active)
I eventually left the program after 11 weeks. I found that I actually started to feel better after stopping the program (which kind of reinforces my whole passage of time theory.)
In any case, I don’t think going to MD health did me any harm. It certainly helped me keep active at a point where I would probably wouldn’t have had the confidence to do unsupervised exercise by myself.
