Studying doesn’t have to be a pain in the neck—literally! You can dodge discomfort with a few simple tweaks to your study setup. Here’s how:

Perfect your desk setup

  • Keep your computer or screen at eye level: This prevents unnecessary strain from looking up or down. Ensure your screen brightness is adequate too, as dim screens can lead to eye strain and headaches.
  • Support yourself: Use a high-quality chair for proper back support. If you are writing or typing, make sure your forearms are supported on the desk and that your keyboard/papers aren’t too far or too close.

Move it to lose it

  • Simple neck exercises: Ease stiff muscles and joints with some easy exercises. Try some slow, controlled head turns, nods, or tilts. My two favourite exercises for study and desk work are: Wall angels and chin tucks.
  • General movement: Regular breaks do wonders. Stand, stretch, or walk around! Use a glass instead of a water bottle—refilling it forces you to get up. Set a timer to remind yourself to move every hour or even more often.

Time to take action!

Give these tips a go the next time you lock in for a long studying or work session! If you have persisting neck pain despite following these tips, it’s best to consult a physiotherapist, osteopath or accredited exercise physiologist to get advice.

Keep your body moving and support it right—because pain has no place in your study space!
