What you can do now in your 50’s, that you couldn’t do when you were younger

As people transition into their 50’s and beyond, embracing a healthy and active lifestyle becomes increasingly vital and in this stage of life, the benefits of strength training become even more apparent.
However, many stick to what is commonly considered ‘gentler’ forms of exercise as opposed to strength training, which is more commonly associated with the younger generation.

We see many people in the older age groups, ranging from 50’s through to the 90’s (our oldest client is 95 years old!) and hear regular stories from clients about what they can do in their lives now compared to when they were younger, thanks to their strength training as part of their clinical exercise program.

Benefits of strength training:

Strength training for older adults is strongly recommended and has many benefits such as:

  • Enhanced Muscle Mass and Bone Density
  • Boosted Metabolism and Weight Management
  • Enhanced Balance and Fall Prevention
  • Increased Energy and Mental Well-being

One of our clients said she took up tennis in her 30’s and still continues to play to this day. She is now in her 50’s, with the ability to play full games at a high intensity and recover really well without much soreness, thanks to her regular participation in strength training, while others around her are regularly injured or take days to recover from a single game.

Strength training also allows people to be more active in general when they’re older, clients regularly tell us about the trips they’ve taken, where they’ve done long hikes or even just spent an entire day sightseeing on their feet with little difficulty, which even when they were younger, they have needed to rest regularly.

Age is a not a barrier to physical prowess, and it is never too late to start, no matter how unfit you may feel. The benefits of strength training can empower you to lead an active, fulfilling life.
